FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI)

The Student Aid Index (SAI) is the FAFSA's estimate of how much your family can contribute to college costs. It replaced the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) in 2024-25 and ranges from -1,500 (highest need) to 999,999 (no need).

The Student Aid Index is calculated from your family's adjusted gross income, assets, family size, and number of children currently in college. Schools use it to determine your Pell Grant eligibility and to inform their own need-based grant offers.

For NCAA swim recruits, SAI is the most important number you don't know — without it, you can only guess at your real net price for any school. University Swim Fit uses your reported SAI to calculate personalized net price for every program in our database.

An SAI at or below zero typically qualifies you for the maximum Pell Grant. An SAI above $30,000 means most of your aid will need to come from merit, athletic, or external scholarships rather than need-based grants.
