About Division I Swimming
Division I swimming offers the highest level of NCAA competition. Programs range from Power Conference programs (ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Pac-12) that produce Olympic Trials qualifiers, to mid-major and developmental D1 programs with more accessible recruiting standards.
D1 programs are subject to NCAA practice hour limits (20 hours per week countable), official visit rules, and the National Letter of Intent signing periods. Coaches cannot initiate phone contact until June 15 after a recruit's sophomore year.
When evaluating D1 programs, the ranking above uses academic quality (Niche overall grade) as the primary factor. Within the same grade tier, lower estimated net price is weighted as a tiebreaker — recognizing that cost is a critical factor in program fit.
This ranking does not reflect swim-speed competition level. For rankings based on your personal event times, build a free University Swim Fit profile to see your personalized Swim Fit score at every D1 program.
